Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 pre-orders are being accepted #android #notapple #samsung

Looks like this Father’s Day could be very good for those dads who have really rocked…

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is shipping on the 17th of June, and pre-orders are being accepted at major retailers now, so dads, be sure to let your family know!

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes in two flavors, a $499.99 version which sports 16GB and a $599.99 version which has 32GB.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used, and personalized Apple iPad 2 64GB w/Verizon 3G?  I would gladly let it go for slightly less than I have in it in order to get the Android Honeycomb 3.1 operating system, Adobe Flash, dual core processor, yada yada yada…  But alas, Verizon has not released their 4G LTE version yet. When that happens, you may be seeing me dump an iPad 2 for just enough to replace it with the Tab 10.1!

If you plan on getting one, or maybe plan on NOT getting one, I’d love to hear what you have to say…

Trend Micro SafeSync cloud storage and sharing solution

You can get more information directly from Trend Micro, and even try it out for free!

Been a long time since we gave something away… What shall it be????

I was asked by a client why we haven’t been giving away stuff…  That’s a good question! I don’t know, we just got distracted with work or something.

If you remember from a while back, we gave away a Cisco Flip Mino HD camera that we won in a contest, and we also gave away a really cool wireless network security camera, some Trend Micro Titanium Anti-Virus product, and a few other little things here and there via silly contests with few rules.

So what should we give away and why?

The Flip was given away because you guys helped us win a contest, the network security camera was to introduce a product to  you that we offer, and Trend was because was love their anti-virus product and want everyone to use it!

Stay tuned here, we will come up with something…  Maybe an X-Box 360?  (We won one of those ourselves!)

Using IE7, Safari 3 or Firefox 3.5 or earlier? You won’t be using Google Apps soon…

It’s time to upgrade your browser if you are using IE7, Safari 3 or Firefox 3.5 or earlier. Not just to have the latest features and the best security, but in order to continue to use websites to their fullest.

Case in point – people using Google for Gmail, Calendars, Talk, Docs and Sites will lose functionality according to Google starting August 1st of 2011 as they are making a switch to supporting only “modern browsers”, and all future code releases will be focused on the newer browser versions.

You can read more about this on the Google Docs Blog http://googledocs.blogspot.com/2011/06/our-plans-to-support-modern-browsers.html

The majority of people should be able to upgrade to newer browsers, however, there will be a handful who are locked into an older browser due to a particular website they use ONLY supporting IE7 for instance. If you are one of those who must use an older browser for a corporate website, but want to run a newer browser, that’s possible! Just download and install Google Chrome for instance and use IE7 only for your corporate site.

Should you need help upgrading your browser, or have questions, please call upon us at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com – we offer business computer support in the Greenville / Upstate, SC area….

“Something More Than a Game” at the Warehouse Theatre in #Greenville @WarehouseGVL

Something More Than a Game

Something More Than a Game at Warehouse Theatre

Thankfully, John, Megan and I were able to fit a night into our busy schedule this month to see “Something More Than a Game” at Greenville’s Warehouse Theatre last Saturday night… and I’m so glad we did!  I am also pleased that we arrived early enough prior to the performance to hear the playwright, Jayce Tromsness, speak to hte audience about his experiences which led to the creation of this wonderful historical play.  Also of interest to me since I am a native Greenvillian of “middle age”, were some of the references to familiar names and places that I remember hearing and seeing as a child.  The play was also ironically seen at the same time by two Greenville icons:  Nick and Emilie Theodore and Dick and Tunky Riley!

I loved how Tromsness wove the story through the old newspaper adage, “When the legend outweighs the facts, print the legend.”  This quote was the basis for the plot that easily carried the audience from present day to 1919 and back again.  The story is told through the relationship of a father and his daughter regarding the myth and legend of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 Black Sox scandal.  More than the scandal and the game, the play delves much deeper into the family dynamics and relationship of a father and his daughter.  The audience soon feels such compassion for Joe Jackson that the event in question takes back seat to Joe’s life and obvious love of the game of baseball.

John and I are not big sport fanatics, so I was a little concerned with how much I would enjoy this play.  But I was delighted with the story and the actors were so perfectly matched to the characters of the play that once again, The Warehouse Theatre enchanted my family!  The next time I’m walking through WestEnd in downtown Greenville, I think I’ll pause a little while to admire the statue of Shoeless Joe =)

Your smartphone could lead to identity theft, if it doesn’t give you cancer first…

Security PadlockThe WHO (World Health Organization) proclamation that cell phones could, maybe, possibly, some way somehow, cause cancer has a bunch of people up in arms.. There are now groups of people swearing off cell phone usage, and now places declaring they are a “cell phone free zone” all in a matter of hours after the WHO announcement.

Sure, they may have a valid concern, but what about the more immediate concern about your smart phone security?

Not much is being said about this one, but I hope that will change. It seems that users of smartphones will believe anything! If an app asks for credentials to a social media site, people give them without questioning it at all. A group of researchers published their findings about 100 apps designed for both the iPhone and Android phones in which they came up with more than a dozen ways in which scammers could utilize malicious code to allow the collection of user names and passwords on popular social media sites!
Here’s their findings…. http://w2spconf.com/2011/papers/felt-mobilephishing.pdf

Obviously, the phishing is good in smartphone land!

Expect more to be said about this from security experts and news outlets as time goes on.

BTW: The next time you are prompted for your credentials, you might want to just think about WHY you would need to give them….

WHO says cell phones may cause cancer! No, that wasn’t a question…

The WHO (no, not the band, but the World Health Organization) has stated that your cell phone emits electromagnetic fields that are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

The chair for the workgroup of the WHO, Jonathan Samet, MD, from the University of Southern California stated, “evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification.” and that “The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cellphones and cancer risk.”.

I guess that means that our overly-connected society is at risk, in general!

How long until heath insurance companies raise the rates of those who own cell phones?
