Goodbye FeedBurner – Hello FeedBlitz

We’re setting up FeedBlitz on our blogs and waving goodbye to Google’s FeedBurner.

FeedBurner was great back in the day, allowing us to have the reach we wanted, and our group of subscribers to get our blog in their inbox. However, Google has made it clear that FeedBurner is not a product they want to support, and just like several of their past projects, it appears it is destined to go away at some point.

Wanting to provide the best service to the readership, we’ve settled on FeedBlitz, which offers everything we had before, but at a cost. Actually, that’s not true, it offers more. Better RSS feeds, ability to share content easier.

I spent a few minutes today moving the subscribers over and doing a quick configuration it, so I guess we will see in the morning if it works properly.

To those of you who might get our email TWICE, I apologize in advance and will have this corrected quickly, so no need to unsubscribe, I promise.

On another note, we are probably going to replace our sporadic newsletter with ONLY the blog posts. We will likely be running our giveaways only from the blog too.

They tried this last year with limited success, but this time, they are more serious about it and the chances are good that you are, in fact, infected if you receive the message, “Your computer appears to be infected. We believe that your computer is infected with malicious software. If you don’t take action, you might not be able to connect to the Internet in the future.”

What is this malware anyway?  DNSChanger affects DNS only, as the name applies, and redirects queries to other websites. Some of the affected DNS servers have been replaced with temporary servers, however, on July 9th a court order will expire and those DNS servers will be shutdown, causing potentially hundreds of thousands of computer users to be without internet connectivity.

An article over on CRN on March 15 entitled “Apple Safari Patch Shows Products Not Hacker Proof” is sure to get some people’s panties in a wad, but it does correctly post the facts, though it will fall short of educating the misled public that Apple products are not hacker proof.

This particular issue is that the WebKit browser engine used in Safari and Google’s Chrome has a multitude of “critical glitches”, 72 of them, that provides a large attack surface. Safari 5.1.4 has addressed these known vulnerabilities and you are encouraged to insure that update is in place.

One of the statements Marcus Carey with Rapid7 was quoted as saying in the above article is, ”Even just allowing employees to install iTunes on their machines exposes the organization to Safari/WebKit vulnerabilities”. That was said in regards to the need to manage the use of Apple laptops, tablets and smartphones when connected to a corporate network.

The instructions for doing so are simply to click on the settings cog at the top of the Google page, then select “Search Settings”.

Next find “Personal results” and select “Do not use personal results”.

This makes the “Hide personal results” the default for your searching pleasure.

No sooner had I posted about that than Google’s Chrome development team had posted that they have an update already prepared for the Chrome browser that in theory should protect from the man-in-the-middle BEAST attack.

Our office has moved to Androids, and in particular Samsung Epic 4G (original and the new Galaxy S II Touch) and absolutely love them.

I’d love you input….

Wellllllll, first of all, these messages, though they come in email and look all official, signed by “System Administrator” or something similar, are likely phishing attempts.

If you hover over the URL listed to “re-validate” your mailbox, or to “increase your storage limit”, you will see that the link has nothing to do with your email host.

People who fall for this and follow the link through are presented with a form which asks for personal information to authenticate your account. That information is destined for parts unknown and could be used for anything from creating new accounts for you, to obtaining personal information about your finances, medical records, or who knows what. In most circumstances, it is going to be for monetary gain.

One I checked out for a client a few minutes ago prompted me to write this blog post…  It was a very authentic looking email that appeared to come from Google’s GMail service. Even the link looked right upon first glance even to me, and understandably to the person who received it. The web interface was in the style of Google’s and other than the VERY in-depth questions, would have passed for a Google page.  It was the supposed “Personal Profile Page”.

We’re talking about asking a person to input their first, last and middle name, street address, phone number, cell phone number, age, sex, birthdate, email address, which is fairly normal, but upon entering bogus information, it took me to a second page.  That one was for “Personal Identity Verification” purposes, “for your safety”. Heh…. It asked you to input security questions for help in identifying you in the future.   Mother’s maiden name, street you grew up on, enter a pin number, old Google password and a new one to change to for security purposes and something you should never be asked for, Drivers License number and expiration, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER and a CREDIT CARD number with expiration date “For account verification purposes only, no charge will appear”.

They had gone to the trouble of putting up a FAQ that was functional, and even a “Contact Us” link that gave you a webform to fill out with your information.

Bottom line here is – don’t believe everything you read, and certainly, don’t just enter your private information into sites just because it LOOK official……

If you have done this recently, you should contact your financial institutions immediately. Watch those credit card bills closely!

Case in point – people using Google for Gmail, Calendars, Talk, Docs and Sites will lose functionality according to Google starting August 1st of 2011 as they are making a switch to supporting only “modern browsers”, and all future code releases will be focused on the newer browser versions.

The majority of people should be able to upgrade to newer browsers, however, there will be a handful who are locked into an older browser due to a particular website they use ONLY supporting IE7 for instance. If you are one of those who must use an older browser for a corporate website, but want to run a newer browser, that’s possible! Just download and install Google Chrome for instance and use IE7 only for your corporate site.

What is the purpose? Smaller desktops, such as those found on netbooks could benefit from gaining a few pixels of real estate on the screen. However, as we browse more visually these days, it is not difficult to imagine that different ways to navigate the web may also be coming. I still enter a large percentage of all sites that I visit in manually, but I can foresee the day when that may not be the case.

Those who use tablets to browse find every way they can to avoid manually putting in the URL already.

Verizon thought you didn’t need the Google browser by default, so they sent you to Bing, and Sprint, they thought navigation would be better handled elsewhere, etc. So you really don’t get a Google Android phone the way Google intended it to be, and in turn, phones run slower, lack the ability to perform certain functions, and it sure makes it difficult to compare a Samsung Galaxy phone on Verizon to one on Sprint or another carrier because they don’t have the same exact install. Most consider them crippled.

You will find a growing number of people have opted to “root” their phones and bypass the garbage, or install a pure Google Android OS on it. Creating phones that run much faster than their stock counterparts.

What about computers? For years, manufacturers of computers have been bundling software with computers. This preinstalled software could add a specific function, allowing you to access features of a notebook that are not supported by the stock Microsoft Windows Operating System, or they could just be junk.

The “junk” ranges from demos of games and applications, to browser search bars and other tools.

It’s easy to see why a manufacturer would bundle a trial of Norton Anti-Virus, because if you register it, they likely get a kickback from Symantec, but, could manufacturers be loading something malicious?

In one article, a man has claimed that Samsung has loaded a keystroke logger on new notebooks… Samsung is denying this, and it is possibly that VIPRE is producing a false positive, but, none-the-less, a cause for concern. Time will tell in this matter.

All these things taken into consideration, it is easy to see why some people buy a new computer and immediately wipe and reload a pure Microsoft Windows operating system.

Google Chrome is Gaining Ground Fast

Are you still using Internet Explorer? The majority of people are that hit our website and most others that track this information, but, as you can see from the graph on the right, alternative browsers are gaining ground.

Microsoft Internet Explorer, like it or not, is the de facto “standard” that web sites and web applications are built to support. There are many reasons for that, and obviously the main one is that IE is shipped with Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, and Microsoft Windows dominates as the OS of choice for both individuals and businesses.

As Apple Mac OS, Linux and other operating systems become a bit more mainstream, the alternative browsers that these systems ship with will cut into the Microsoft IE market share, but there is more going on here than a switch to new operating systems.

You are probably way ahead of me on this, but due to concerns over security, there seems to be a mass exodus away from IE. We’ve heard from our clients that they are worried about the seemingly endless flow of vulnerability announcements from Microsoft and then the subsequent patches that must be installed in order to ensure they can safely browse the web.

That, combined with the fact that other browsers are offering what feels like a faster browsing experience, a slew of new features, additional plugins or addons not available on IE, and a shiny new look makes it easy to see why the IE market share has dropped and Chrome has come up.

Chrome recently added some Active Directory integration making the browser even better than before for System Administrators.

Surprisingly, Mozilla Firefox, the second most popular browser, has actually been declining in popularity along side IE, while Safari and Opera have remained pretty constant in the low end of the scale.

With Chrome breaking into the ten percent market share, and pulling away from Apple’s Safari rapidly, it appears that Chrome could overtake Firefox in the next 12 to 18 months. Very interesting information.

No matter which browser you use, remember, there ARE security flaws. Chrome is not impervious to exploits, so, please remember to browse responsibly! Use current anti-virus / anti-malware, and common sense. (IE, Don’t install addons, plugins or codecs etc that you do not trust).

The downside is that there is a 20 dollar fee to do this, but the upside would be that for those who do, you could have that one number you give out to everyone now routed to your Google Voice account, and through the use of rules / filter, control what becomes of the incoming calls.

For instance, you could have all phone calls from a particular number routed to your new cell phone number when they call the Google number.

You could create client lists and control what becomes of those calls too. During business hours, send them to your cell number, but after hours – straight to voice mail.

The action of porting your existing number is pretty easy. On your Google Voice account simply go to SETTINGS, then select the CHANGE/PORT link beside your Google Voice number. Remember, there is a 20 dollar charge, and there are restrictions from many wireless providers.

Browser Wars!

I normally don’t weigh in on the browser wars, as each browser has its own place. For instance, there simply is no replacement for Microsoft Internet Explorer if you want near 100% compatibility with every site in the world.

Obviously, each alternate browser has a strong point, such as speed, or installation size, or security, but each browser also has downsides that sometimes keep people, especially administrators from adopting something other than IE.

One such downside is that in many cases, for an administrator to deploy an alternative browser such as Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome, they have been forced to install at each machine, and for each user of that machine, or employ little “tricks”. Once installed, they then have an update and management issue where they don’t know why Bob’s browser doesn’t have the same extensions as Mary’s browser without checking it out (remotely or physically visiting the machine generally because it is faster than actually talking to Bob) to resolve the situation.

Recently Google has created a new installer designed for enterprise use. It allows a system administrator to utilize active directory in a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 corporate domain to push the browser out to PCs (Windows XP Professional, Windows 7 Pro), control which extensions are used, lock down a proxy server, insure all installations are up to date, etc. Policies control many factors (the list can be found here).

Google Chrome may not be able to replace all aspects of IE, however, from the looks of it, it would appear that they are trying.

These predictions are based upon industry news, social media and blog rambling as well as some personal wishes.

Will any of it come to fruition? I guess at the end of 2011 you can remind me how wrong I was.

A few IT Predictions for 2011:

• Google Android based devices will continue to dominate the market in smartphones, pads, and everything else from alarm clocks and personal weather stations to set top boxes.

• Wireless carriers will discover that loading their own “value added” bundled software on top of the phones they sell is really a turn off and that keeping the smartphone just as the manufacturer and OS provider intended it to be will enable a faster rollout of updates and make for happier customers.

• Dish, DirecTV & cable TV providers have a fight on their hands… Services like Netflix and a whole slew of streaming providers will fight to bring first run movies, and streaming of networks via the internet. We will see many new set top boxes, TVs with built-in streaming capability. The most exciting thing will be an the legal battles around this, not really the technology itself.

• Tablet and pad wars will continue. Apple’s iPad II will provide some stiff competition for the Android pads, but be prepared for Android based pads to spring up everywhere as more are cleared for import to the USA.

• Internet Tax? Yep, 2011 is the year. So much revenue is being lost that I predict we will see taxes placed on our online purchases. I believe it will be both good and bad. Some online retailers may no longer be able to beat out the local brick and mortar prices, so that could be good for us smaller guys, but it may slow down the injection of money into the economy. Either way, it’s coming.

• Cloud Computing: Over half of all businesses will look into using cloud based services, whether it is online storage, online backup, online applications like Microsoft BPOS or Google Apps, hosted anti-virus, hosted anti-spam or even hosted VoIP solutions. Of these, 10% will actually make the switch, and half who do make the switch will be totally happy, with the other dissatisfied due to bandwidth or network reliabilty. The number of fully satisfied people will go up as the technology matures.

• Malicious software will affect more Macs and Linux based machines in 2011. We’ve already seen a sharp increase in the number of exploited machines, expect this trend to continue. Add to this smartphones as a target.

• Network Connectivity: Charter Business has just come out with a 75×5 meg Pro75 package. This is great, but I expect this to reach 100×10 by the end of 2011, possibly as a free upgrade like they upgraded the 20meg to 30meg…

What do you think the very near future has in store for us? More solid state storage devices? Hard Drives reaching 5TB?

I’ve done it myself, installed some game, which states clearly that it will have access to totally unrelated areas of the phone, like the camera, or the GPS.

Well, an article in the Wall Street Journal the other day highlights how the information gathered by these apps is being used. It appears that this behavior is more rampant on the iPhone than on Androids, but the study is not as indepth as it could be for sure.

All I have to say is, whether you are using an Android or an iPhone, be careful out there. You don’t want your phone watching your every move…

What do these terms mean? To over-simplify the definition, it means that something is not stored at your location. It is stored “in the cloud”, or on a remote server, and accessed via the internet. The “it” could be data, as in your databases, email, files, or it could be programs / applications, such as web based suites of software like Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word or custom applications.

All this talk about moving to “the cloud”, a term which is generically used for the internet, has people thinking about how it can be used for their business. Let’s take our own small business and use it as an example.

Currently, we use a large server which has Microsoft Server 2008 loaded on it and functions as our domain controller, DNS, DHCP, and other standard server tasks… It also serves as our file server, and it hosts Microsoft Exchange for our in-house email. Other tasks this one piece of hardware is responsible for are: TFTPd for management of our VoIP phone system’s configuration files, backup of data (Using multiple backup systems such as Servosity Online Backup Solution, an “in the cloud” product, and MozyPro) and Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Advanced for anti-virus and anti-spam.

We have a second server which hosts additional files, Blackberry Enterprise Server (not currently in use due to the switch to Android phones), and is a test bed for us. Then we have two other servers, a Voice over IP server based on Linux OS which is in control of our phone system & voice mail, and a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) for storage of video from our CCTV cameras.

In order to reduce some overhead, we could potentially maintain a smaller main server with only Windows 2008 R2 running on it as a domain controller, then utilize Microsoft Aurora, or even Microsoft BPOS (Business Productivity Online Suite), allowing mail storage and transport to take place outside our building.

We could then switch from Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Advanced to the Trend Hosted solution, relieving our server from those duties.

Since we are already using a remote backup solution, we would not have to worry about that, and our backup requirements would actually drop since we would no longer need to backup the Microsoft Exchange Store (Microsoft would handle that for us with the BPOS solution).

As you can see, eliminating the main server entirely from the equation here is not going to be possible, however a considerable amount of storage, backup, and resources could be moved elsewhere.

One thing to take into consideration before moving to these hosted solutions is, what if our internet is down? That is a good question which still has many people concerned about these technologies. In the case of online file storage, if you do not have cached storage at your location, you simply have no access to it. In the case of mail, if you are caching the information locally, you CAN see your old/existing email, but you cannot send or receive new mail until the connection is reestablished. It is important to note that cloud based email will still RECEIVE email when your business is without an internet connection and you will get it as soon as the connection is reestablished, something that doesn’t happen now if you use an onsite Exchange Server, unless you are using a mail hold & forward (spool) system at your ISP or other provider.

Apple iPad being used more and more for business

My initial reaction to the iPad was that it was cute little toy, but then immediately after its release it became apparent that people wanted to use them for business as well as pleasure. First was the use of Remote Desktop (Terminal Services), which I wrote about and has been finding extreme popularity, then of course was Microsoft Exchange integration to get corporate mail and with that came ways to get connectivity without buying the 3G version of the iPad, using a MiFi from Verizon, and ultimately, hacking the iPad itself and putting a MiFi inside the iPad.

Now that some time has passed since the release of the iPad, we see that many companies and even government organizations have adopted them for real business use. Case in point, the Ontario, CA City Council has begun using the tablet computers and that alone shows how a new technology is changing the way we do business.

I’m seeing more and more interest in these highly portable devices from business users and as more manufacturers develop and release their products, we may see a tablet computing revolution, where the day planners, notebooks, notepads, and even post-it notes go in the trash in favor of this digital ink. And the SaaS (Software as a Service) model will make a lot of providers wealthy.

Businesses who want to get in on this phenomenon should talk to their IT provider to see how easily this technology can be integrated into their networks. The Android Wars Are Coming

The tablet computer wars are coming…  The awesome little Apple iPad will soon have serious competition from some big names in desktop, laptop and notebook computers….

Cisco, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP and LG, to name a few have either made plans to release pad / tablet computers, or have actually got a product to offer. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

No longer will you have to choose an Apple iPad, you will be able to select tablets based on the Google Android operating system, which will instantly provide you with tons of apps from the Android scene, and when HP gets their WebOS based system out, which was really part of the Palm lineup, that will be yet another platform for the tablet market. We shouldn’t forget about Microsoft (which some of you would love to), as they have an OS that is working on tablets also.

So how will you decide which is the best solution for you? It may come down to dollars and cents for some, while others may select based upon devices they already own. I was sure that most Mac and iPhone users would opt for an iPad out of owner loyalty to the brand, but the Android offering seems to be getting a lot of attention among the current Apple owners, enough so that they are holding out for the Android pads to hit the market!

Only time will tell who will come out on top, but my money is on the consumer in the end, as they are going to get many choices and the competition between brands and platforms will help bring the prices down!

There may be a few of you who want to be early adopters of the Android tablet and purchase an imported product. Buyer beware here – they may not support the new Android OS due out later this year…

Apple's Safari browser offers MS IE some stiff competition for security vulnerabilities!

The headline says it all – Apple just patched 48 vulnerabilities in their Safari internet browser, making it appear that the highly revered browser is now more of a threat to society than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer! Imagine that!?!?

Apple considers the updates to be “highly critical” and they are available for both v4.1 and v5.0, on both the Mac and the Windows operating system platforms..

What kind of vulnerabilities you ask? A number of them involve what is known as “remote code execution”, where a person browsing with a vulnerable version of the Safari browser could happen upon a malicious website, and code on that site could take ownership of the browsing computer by exploiting the security holes. The list is available HERE.

The solution is to get your browser updated ASAP, either to the latest version of the browser, which will get the latest updates, or, to update your current version. Should you require help with that, reply and I will try to give a step-by-step. Of course, there are alternate browsers you can use too, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google’s Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer to name a few.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 finally going to die!

Internet Explorer 6 has served us well. So well that people are still using it instead of the updated versions or the alternative browsers that are available. Estimates are that IE6 has a share of the browser market of around 20-25%, but a review of our own web logs which keep tabs on which browsers are used to view our site indicate that of the Explorer users only 6.69% viewing our site are using IE6. ( 18.4% are using IE 7 and 74.91 are using IE 8 )

That said, IE6 is also full of holes that cannot be easily fixed, nor is it worth it to MS to try to maintain IE6 when IE8 addresses these issues. So upgrade your browser…  Upgrade to IE8, or try an alternative browser like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc…  Just dump IE6! Need more incentive? Many websites have planned for the demise of IE6. They will no longer offer support for it soon. And Microsoft has pledged to kill off IE6 themselves just this week.

Here is an entertaining link from Microsoft Australia about IE6, which says “You wouldn’t drink milk that was past its expiration date” – Gotta admit, that’s a great point!

Cisco offers a full line of Gigabit and switches, routers and firewalls

Have you noticed retrieving files from your server is feeling slower? Accessing a database on your network is sluggish? Moving large files takes a long time? But be warned, there are some gotchas…  You might be purchasing a Gigabit switch and think that will be all you need and the wiring may not support the throughput, or you might find if you maintain a mixed mode, that some 10/100/1000 switches may not work with certain 10/100 cards, and the most popular is purchasing a cheap component and actually seeing a reduction in speed because it doesn’t support “jumbo frames”. So if you have any questions, consult your computer service professional or network support professional. Also, if you planning on a VoIP (Voice over IP) phone system, you may want to take that into consideration so you do not have to upgrade switches again to PoE (Power over Ethernet).
