IronKey D200 32GB USB secure device
I’m often asked which is the best USB flash drive you can buy. My answer varies with the requirements of the individual or business that will utilize the device.
The average person requires a fast and reliable storage device to shuttle files to/from work or school, and does not require security features at all, but for those who do require encryption, there are a number of options available.
One manufacturer stands out from the crowd and that is IronKey and their line of flash drives from “Basic” to “Enterprise”, touted as “The world’s most secure flash drive”.
IronKey has recently released the D200 32GB “Personal” flash drive which you can read more about on their website.
This is an excerpt: Your identity and personal data are too valuable to risk. IronKey Personal keeps you protected with military-grade encryption and easy-to-use identity management. The result of extensive R&D and the collaboration of some of the world’s leading experts in cryptography and the Internet, IronKey is the world’s most secure flash drive. IronKey Personal comes loaded with a secure private browser that lets you surf anonymously and protects your passwords whenever you go online. IronKey Personal simplifies your digital lifestyle while giving you added peace of mind.
IronKey secure 32GB USB devices provide higher speeds, managed and auditable encryption required to prevent data breaches with always-on encryption and achieve a safe harbor for compliance.
Who needs 32GB devices?
Uses for higher capacity drives include…
- Government: Military personnel needing to transport sensitive documentation.
- IT Department: Transporting patches, operating systems, applications and large files.
- Executives: Carrying company sensitive data including M&A, financials, strategy, and organizational data.
- Entertainment Industry: Digital Rights Management – studios can control the number of times trailers are viewed.
- Other Examples: High volume sensitive information that requires encryption outside a network include CAD files, Medical Imaging files, Financial, Legal and Mortgage Documents.
Pardon the pun with the “dollars & sense” thing, but really that is what it comes down to, whether it makes sense, not just the dollar amount.

In my previous post, we looked at a company we will call “Business One”, a local small business using PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) with their old key phone system and asked the question “Are you paying too much for your business phone service?”…
Obviously, there was money to be saved by simply changing how they have always done things, however, there was expense involved, which came in the form of the need for a new phone system. Let’s look at what is involved to move “Business One” from an aging key phone system to a new VoIP (Voice over IP) system.
First, let’s see what the current system comprised of:
- 8 total extensions
- 3 outside phone lines
- Paging to a speaker (broken)
- Paging to phones
- NO music on hold option
- NO Automated Attendant capability
- NO voice mail (Simple answering machine turned on manually)
- NO voice mail going to email
- NO Caller ID display
We’re talking a very basic digital key system. It has accomplished what they needed, and nothing more.
So what would we be putting in place?
Cisco’s new UC320W Unified Communications system, which is one unit that controls the local VoIP system, provides a security router, gigabit switch, wireless 802.11n and more. This is the baby brother to the UC540 system, and it supports up to 24 extensions, 4 copper phone lines, and a fax/phone/credit card machine port.
With additional modules, it can support even more phone lines, at the expense of losing one extension for each additional outside line over 4. (If you had 8 phone lines, you could only have 20 extensions).

For desk sets, Business One has determined they need only the basics, no color display, bluetooth or MP3 player needed here.
We opted for the Cisco SPA504G, a 4 line display phone with outstanding audio quality, crystal clear speakerphone, dedicated headset port, message waiting indicator and an AUX port to connect the optional 32 button sidecar which allows the programming of single button speeddials, transfers, etc. These phones also have a network passthru for the connected PCs and Power Over Ethernet (POE).
To enable the two people who answer phone the most there the ability to easily transfer calls to other worker voice mail and extensions, we added two of the 32 button sidecars (SPA500S). They can tell if someone is using their extension at a glance, and transfer a call they answered easily to another extension, or send it straight to that extension’s voice mail with the push of one button.
The old phone system does not use CAT5 wiring, so new wiring was required to several extensions, and since there are no power outlets in some of those locations, a Cisco ESW-520-8p switch was in order. This switch provides 8 ports of 10/100 ethernet WITH Power Over Ethernet (Meaning, all 8 extensions would not require to have a power adapter plugged into the wall)
The client had an existing 10/100/1000 (gigabit) network for their computers, but it was decided that keeping the networks isolated would be desirable. That fact, combined with the desire to have Power Over Ethernet and long runs of cabling that were required to the warehouse area made for a more costly solution than may be necessary in many cases. However, the complete, turn-key solution rang in at about $4500 dollars. By turn-key, we mean, start to finish: Consultation, installation, configuration & training.
By switching to to this VoIP solution and to the SIP trunks as outlined in the previous post, in less than 2.5 years, the new VoIP system will pay for itself, while providing many features this client has never enjoyed!
New features that Business One can enjoy:
- Automated Attendant (Many calls are handled by the phone system)
- Voice Mail for each extension (will replace a single answering machine)
- Night Attendant will provide different greeting/functions after hours
- Music on Hold
- Voice mail is sent to their email to listen to on a smartphone
- Caller ID so they can screen those salespeople!
- Display phones loaded with features
- Ability to transfer a call to their cell phones, or even forward all calls
- Full call logging, see at a glance every incoming/outgoing call
- 8 Simultaneous calls through SIP (instead of the 3 they had before)
- Ability to use inexpensive SIP trunks for service!
That’s just the tip of the iceberg! Their old system has seen better days, so switching to a full fledged VoIP solution and taking advantage of a decrease in service will pay for itself…
Now, if they would just consider the Cisco SPA525G2 phone, with its beautiful color display, built-in MP3 player, bluetooth connectivity to headsets and cellphones, then they would be stylin!
If you would like to talk about how a system like this could be implemented at your business, please call us at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com. We are your Greenville / Upstate SC Cisco SMB Select Partner!
Most businesses have a love-hate relationship with their phone systems, often settling for less than everything they need because it is inexpensive, low-maintenance or not too complicated.
We have always wanted the most features that we could get, so a VoIP (Voice over IP) solution was the only way to go! We initially used enterprise class Cisco 7960 VoIP phone sets with an Asterisk based system and a couple phone lines provided by Charter, and a couple provided by Vonage.
We had everything we wanted and needed with that system…
- Automated Attendant
- Voice Mail
- Voice Mail sent to our Email
- Full featured SIP phones with multi-line, displays, etc
- Call tracking, with full logs showing incoming/outgoing call detail
- Music On Hold
- Ability to forward calls to cell phones
- Good audio quality, speaker phone capability
We never really wanted for additional features, but along comes the Cisco UC 320 series which is an ideal fit for many of our own clients. Obviously, we want to provide support to those who may be using this type of system, so we purchased one for ourselves and at the same time purchased a few of the latest SPA 525G2 phones from Cisco and some SPA504s and even the SPA301.
Seeing as how change was coming, we also switched to a SIP trunk with 8 channels (simultaneous lines in use) in addition to the two lines from Charter, so we should not be hurting for available phone lines and nobody should get a busy signal…
The Cisco VoIP solution is very nice for small to medium offices like our own! Out of the box, it supports everything we had before, but here are a few of the details:
- Support for four copper (standard) phone lines from MaBell (or Charter, or a Vonage ATA, etc)
- Support for sending out to analog devices (you can give your FAX its own extension number for instance or use analog phones)
- Support for using SIP trunks (cheaper than analog lines)
- 24 phone extensions (more on this further down)
- Built-in gigabit switch
- Built-in router
- Built-in 802.11 n/b/g wireless for phones and data
- Music On Hold
- Automated Attendant
- Call logs for external calls
- Supports the full line of Cisco SPA series phones
If you need MORE incoming copper lines, you can add them 4 at a time (up to 12 total) with another device, but you lose an extension for each line you add.
The old 7960G phones rocked for their quality, phone books, and their ability to use external XML scripts to get the weather, etc, but the new phones do not make me miss them at all!
The SPA 525G2 desk sets have too many cool features to list without you getting bored and your eyes glazing over! Here’s a few:
- Color display
- Built-in MP3 player lets you listen to your favorite music directly on your speaker phone (pauses when an incoming call comes in)
- Bluetooth headset support
- Bluetooth linking to your cell/smartphone – Lets you use your smartphone as an additional extension. Answer your cell via your desk phone, place calls on it, even load the cell phone’s directory directly onto your desk phone. Also view the battery charge and signal strength on the SPA 525G2.
- Ability to link up to two 32 button consoles
- Outstanding audio quality on handset and speaker phone
- View Cisco Small Business security cameras on the color display of the SPA 525G2 phone (you can place a camera and a one line phone in your lobby for instance, view who is there, and speak with them)
- Built-in web applications, let you get the current news and weather on your phone’s display
If you are considering a new phone system for your business and you never need more than 12 lines or 24 extensions, then this may be the system for you! In fact, if you did happen to expand past its capabilities, Cisco has a trade-up program to move you to a larger system and you can continue to use the existing phones with it.
We are offering the Cisco UCW320 and the complete line of Cisco Unified Communications systems for Small and Medium Businesses for sale, but also offer consultation, planning, installation and support of these amazing VoIP solutions. In Greenville / Upstate, SC, please call us at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com for more information.
Anyone who has been following this blog knows that it was just about a month ago that I bought Android based phones and dumped our (until recently) beloved RIM Blackberry phones…
My thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G after EXTENSIVE use are pretty much what I knew the day we first got them:
- Short battery life (Have increased that significantly through smarter usage of the device)
- Screen Unlock goes up/down (vertical) instead of from one side to the other like most, which is not a big deal, but takes a longer stroke to unlock
- Charging port is on TOP of the device, which pulls the phone away from your ear when using a coiled car charger and puts undo stress on the port
- When plugged in, still goes to sleep the same as when on battery (there may be a setting that I have not found)
Those are the major negatives, but overall, this phone rocks! Glad we moved all our business phones to this device.
We have now obtained another Samsung Galaxy phone, and this time it is the Samsung Fascinate, on Verizon. This is my wife’s phone and she too has moved to an Android from a Blackberry.
The Fascinate is a great phone, and I like it better than the Epic 4G for many reasons, one of which is that I didn’t really need that slide out keyboard, which just makes for a bulkier phone, but also, battery life seems to be better on the Fascinate, while still being super fast and having that brilliant display that the Epic 4G does. It also does not go to sleep while plugged in like the Epic 4G does.
A few of the negatives:
- Shorter battery life than the Blackberry (duh, much larger display, more going on here folks!)
- Charging port is on the top… Only important if using the phone while plugged in.
- No dedicated camera button
- No front facing camera
- No notification light (There are some apps for a workaround)
- And the number one annoyance – Verizon forced BING on the Fascinate owners. Again, workarounds exist, but why oh why do you have to be locked into something you don’t want?
In all, the Fascinate is another amazing smartphone from Samsung.
Last but not least, let me tell you about my first impressions of the Samsung Galaxy S Tab… I love this thing! After suffering with a low-budget 7 inch Android tablet I told you about months ago, I finally got to experience the Android OS on something that can actually support it nicely.
The Sumsung Tab is a 7 inch tablet that is basically an over-grown Samsung cell phone. It has all the features, except the ability to use it as a phone that you hold up against your ear (which would look kinda silly).
It really is an impressive device! The Tab is blazing fast, changes screens instantly, changes orientation instantly, shows HD video in beautiful color and motion.
What’s not to like? Well, it is NOT a phone. You can text msg with it, but not use it with bluetooth to replace a phone. The camera is only 3 Megapixel, but it’s not meant to replace your dSLR camera after all. And the price is a bit on the high side, but I imagine that will drop after Christmas, or at least I hope it does. I checked out the Verizon Tab, but it is available at Sprint as well, for 399 with a 50 dollar instant rebate, with the purchase of a 29.99/mo 2GB plan.
Without a plan, expect to pay close to 600 I hear, making it pricier than an iPad. Which is going to be the obvious question on your mind… “Should I get an iPad or a Samsung Pad?”. Well that depends. The iPad is bigger, and well established, but we are days away from a 7″ iPad release. Obviously if you are a big Apple fanatic, with a lot of iTunes music, an iPad is a no-brainer, however, if you have no ties to Apple or iTunes, the Samsung Galaxy S Tab would likely be the best bet for you.
Planning on using a tablet for work on your Microsoft Terminal Server or via Remote Desktop? Using the Wyse app, the Tab would be terrific!
I was asked via Twitter if the Tab felt odd in my hand, in particular the back of the device. I did not notice anything of that nature, it felt natural, like I needed to leave the store with it my hand, but my wifey @PamelaHoyt wouldn’t allow that after the purchase of her new phone.
I’ll keep you up to date on the Fascinate purchase…. Until then, if you need any assistance getting your Android phone setup to work with your Microsoft Exchange Server in the Greenville or Upstate area, please give us a call at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com, we service & support for computers and mobile devices.

Now Trend Micro has taken an already incredible product and turned it up to 11! (sorry for the “This is Spinal Tap” reference).

Will Ragland as Dr. Frank-N-Furter
I’m sure most people who are of a certain age (say, in their 40s?) have seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show, staring Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter… And maybe more than a few have been to a midnight showing of that movie at a movie theater. However, how many people have experienced a live performance of it?
A live performance may come in many flavors. When I lived in Los Angeles, we saw it where people dressed up and participated in the theater, and more interesting is where actors will be on the stage, and perform along with the audio playing and the actual movie on the screen behind them, and yet another way has been for the video to play, while actors and a band perform along with it (all while the audience participates)…
If you have NEVER seen the RHPS, you can catch it on the FOX Movie Channel on Halloween… All night long…. You will need an open mind, and maybe an adult beverage. More information can be obtained at http://www.rockyhorror.com/. This movie has nothing to do with “horror”, it is a rock-n-roll tribute to Sci-Fi movies of the past, with a naughty / risque flare. I don’t recommend it for immature people, or those who are easily offended.
This past Saturday, Oct-22-2010, at midnight, my wife Pamela, daughter Megan and her friend Nick went with me to the Warehouse Theatre’s production of The Rocky Horror Show. Prior to this, I had only seen it performed in the stage show manner once, and to be quite honest, it wasn’t fantastic. It was as good as amateurs could do, and everyone had a great time, but it wasn’t a “production”, it was a party.
Pamela, Megan and Nick had never seen any form of RHPS other than the movie, and didn’t know what to expect. I was not certain how it was going to be performed either since as I mentioned previously, I have seen it in various formats.
The Warehouse Theatre production is a full stage show, there is absolutely no tie to the movie itself. All scenes are performed by the actors themselves, all music is from a live band.
For those who love the movie, your first thought may be, “This is going to stink”, because as everyone knows, it is very hard to pull off a well known number such as “Sweet Transvestite” and not be compared (unfavorably) with Tim Curry’s version. Likewise, the other characters from the motion picture are very dynamic and difficult to reproduce. Admittedly, I went in expecting somewhat of a lackluster show. In the words of Magenta, “I ask for nothing”. Then Frank’s reply: “And you shall receive it… In abundance!!!!”

Rocky Horror Show Cast
That was not the case at all. The actors that portrayed the main characters were unbelievable! Will Ragland brought a new twist to Frank, without trying to duplicate his every nuance, and Rocky… Ohhhh Rocky, he was far better than the original Rocky in the movie! Better in every way… He sang his own parts (as did all the actors), and he looked the part. (My wife and daughter, and just about everyone were fixated on this guy’s genuinely beautiful physique… Uhmm, okay, that sounded weird for ME to say that, but it’s true).
These actors had to do something that Tim Curry and his movie cast never had to worry with, they had to perform while the audience shouted out all kinds of off the wall comments, as is the tradition with RHPS. The actors managed to keep straight faces, and use a good bit of improv to interact with the audience, which made the show all the more fun! Audience participation is a major part of this, and there are guides on the internet that will show you what to do, what to say, when to say it, etc.
We purchased the “audience participation pack”, which included light sticks (since flames are dangerous), confetti, newspaper etc. No rubber gloves or noisemakers as some scenes from the movie are not present, such as the dinner/birthday party scene, where you get to say “Meatloaf again????”. But, not missed, and I’m sure were not part of the original stage production.
I’m a technical kind of guy, and very critical when it comes to audio and lighting, so I will add this in for those of you who are like me and love to pick things apart. The audio was absolutely perfect. Good levels, and great control, especially when you take into consideration the number of open mics involved. The lighting could not have been improved upon.
Every number performed by the band was well orchestrated, the mix was low, but necessary in order to have legible vocals. I only wish I could have played guitar or bass (I even emailed the Warehouse Theatre and asked if they needed a guitarist or bass player, but they had already put their band together by that time).
The remaining shows are probably sold out by now, even though they added some extra performances in November, so if you want to attend and see what all this is about, call TODAY – The box office number is 864.235.6948 or you can visit their website for more information.
My hat is off to the cast and the crew for a superb job! We had a marvelous evening out (early morning rather) and as always, with the Warehouse Theatre, it didn’t break the bank like it would have at other venues in Greenville.
Yeah, I know, this has absolutely nothing to do with Computer Service, Computer Repair or even Business, but even hard working people have to take a break and enjoy themselves every once in a while. I highly recommend it.

Seidio Innocase Surface for Samsung Epic 4g
So you bought the coolest phone you could find and now you want to protect it…
That was our situation a couple weeks ago and we looked high and low for quality cases and holsters for the Samsung Epic 4g and everything we found was cheaply made.
Enter the Seidio Innocase Surface for the Epic 4g. Wow, this is a great case, and it has a matching holster that makes it a complete deal. We are in the computer service industry and constantly using our phones, so the quality of the holster is very important. In fact, having a reliable and rugged holster was one reason we stuck with the Blackberry so long, as RIM has done it right all along.
Back to the Seidio product… You can buy just the case, or you can buy the case and holster combo for a few dollars more.
The case snaps firmly to the phone and does not interfere with any of the functions, including the slide-out keyboard. It has a rubberized finish that sticks nicely in your hand, and I can assure you it is pretty robust as I have already tested it. It is available in all the normal colors one would expect; Sapphire Blue, Burgundy, Rose Pink, Amethyst (pictured to the left), Black, Ash Grey and Sage. We purchased cases in purple (That’s mine), Blue and Red and love the colors.

Seidio Innocase Holster
The holster is designed to work only if you have the Seidio Innocase Surface installed on your phone. It features a spring loaded release, and a snug fit that cradles the phone with the faceplate facing inward. The belt clip feels strong and secure. This holster rotates from vertical to horizontal layouts for wearing on your left or right sides.
For more information about Seidio’s products, visit their website at www.SeidioOnline.com. Though we have only had experience with the Innocase Surface for the Samsung Epic 4g, if the rest of their products are anything like these, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Are you using an Asterisk based VoIP system and have your voice mails sent to you via email? If you are using an Android based phone, you may not be able to open these attachments within email and play them.
Several forums discuss workarounds that should get you going, such as having the VoIP system convert the audio file to MP3 format, but there is an easier way than that.
We found a great Android app in the Market Place that handles this perfectly! For the price of only 99 cents, you can open your emails, and if they contain WAV file attachments, play them, instead of possibly saving them, then using another media player to listen.
There are probably free apps that will do the same thing, however, this one tested well and performs as expected, so I will recommend it to you.
Search the Android Market Place for “WavPlayer”, it is by Dennis Lockshine.
Once installed, open an email with a voice mail (WAV) attachment and you can then PLAY. When prompted, select the WAV Player app…
If you are using another app, maybe a free one, or a more full featured one, I would love to hear from you… If you are in the Greenville / Upstate SC area and need help with this app or your VoIP system, please call us at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com
Since we have cameras at our offices and homes, it was only natural to want to see them on our new Android phones (Samsung Epic 4g).
We downloaded every app we could find in the marketplace and tried each of them out. Without a doubt, the best remote camera viewer was “IP Cam Viewer” by Robert Chou.
This app is only $10.00 to purchase, and free to use if you only have 4 cameras. The registered version will view all of our cameras at all locations as the app supports up to 32 cameras.
Will it work with your system? Chances are good that it will as it supports over 200 camera systems. It had settings for our office CCTV DVR where we have 8 cameras and our Panasonic IP cameras at the office (4 additional cameras) as well as the cameras that keep watch over our home, which are also Panasonic IP cameras.
We can view all of them at once on the phone, or view one large and several smaller frames. We can use the Pan-Tilt-Zoom functionality and a really cool feature is that we can enable the microphones and listen in at the remote site for the cameras that support that.
So if you are looking for the perfect app for your Android based phone, skip all the others, which seem to have annoying issues and lack of compatibility and download IP Cam Viewer Lite first. I bet you pay the 10 bucks and register it within 24hrs!
If you are wanting security / surveillance cameras for your home or business, we offer a wide selection of standard CCTV systems and IP Network Cameras, DVRs, NVRs, and more! Call us at 864.990.4748 or email info@homelandsecureit.com
